Class exercise - burberry and color scheme

1. The first one is achromatic color scheme. You can see that there are black, grey and white color on that. As there is light yellow and pink added, it creates a harmonious effect. It's because the value of yellow and redcolor is high, which is near white.

2. The second one is mono-chromatic scheme. It uses different shade and tint of same color - red, to create harmony. The value of black is high, therefore, it becomes grey color and the value of it is similar to the value of red, also create the harmonious effect.

Before I learnt the color scheme, my collection has a horrible color matching. The better one is the 2nd one and 3rd one. Others, either the value and chroma is wrong, or the wrong color scheme.

After I learnt the color scheme, I learn to use mono-chromatic scheme like the last one. Also, I learn to use spit complentary scheme (5th picture) as I don't use it before.

Characteristics in design

'I am a rebel but not an outsider.' - Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood's design emphasise rebel and anti-society in order to get freedom, so she use Punk as a mean to make her design in 1970-1980. When Punk power had declined to react against the mainstream fashion, she realised that she could not use Punk as the theme of design forever. Therefore, she wanted to change her direction.

In the mid 1980s, she started look into history and literature. When she study about the 18th century fashion in the museum, she noticed that the designers of 18th century had a drastically different approach to fashion. They freely made folds and drapes that moved when the person move. This idea had inspired Vivienne. After that, Vivienne's design emphasize the forms and shapes that make a woman feminine. And she do think that a lady should not hide their body figure. And overall the 1990s, historicism has become the dominant theme. All kinds of uniforms can be her inspirations such as regalia for the Queen, tartan for the romantic Scots, safari suits for shooting tigers, uniforms for soldiers and sailors, students, scouts, sportsmen and policemen.

Becasue her inspiration is come from traditional elements, she does not need to make outrageous items of rebellion. However, she uses a much gentle way to show her rebellion, that is "banter". It means that she use traditional element to make her design to show the new look. And this look show the humor.

"Banter" is a skill that mostly used in the literature. For example, English Writer Shakespeare like to use this skill in his work.

Vivienne Westwood - Her Character

Vivienne Westwood was just born to be rebel.

For example, when she noticed there was a long queue outside the girls' toilet, she decided not to follow the rule - queue, and she simply went to the boys' toilet.

Instead of her inborn confrontation, her parents also played a role affecting her character.

In Vivienne's childhood, her parents did not put too much stress on her studying. Therefore, it made her so independent. Instead, they encourage Vivienne to develop a love for the countryside. This has developed a sense of creativity for her.

In 1954, her mother became village postmistress. The post office was under her mother's name, setting an example of female independence to Vivienne.
